Equality - a finnicky thing

Speakers blaring devotional music, accompanied by excellent drummers .Fairy lights, a huge crowd of people chanting with fervour, flyers with pictures of various Gods floating around in the dense, incense filled air.
All in all, a very festive scene that gets imprinted even in the minds of those that don't essentially believe in gods with form. And yet, a few metres away from this magical scene, something tragic was happening.
A drunk man, oblivious to the world around him, was obsessed with the one task at hand - thrashing the woman in front of him with a stick (yes, I too thought these things happen only in movies and serials but apparently, these things happen in real life too). Worse still, some people (obviously, drunk) were standing around, applauding and booring at the misfortune of the poor lady. He was abusing her, objectifying her as something that exists to pleasure and produce. There is a Police van standing beside,
the driver of which informs promptly that he can't possibly intervene in a domestic feud unless the affected approaches him. We cannot call ourselves an advanced civilization while stuff like this is still happening. Women are not just objects, they are human beings, the same way that our mothers, sisters and relations are.
They have their dreams, lifestyles and rights to live the same way that men do. Unless we're all equal, we're not an advanced civilization, not even close. This is as dark as the middle ages at it's peak. Equality and equanimity are not just words to remember and use in speeches, they are the very basis of a successful society.
I know what you're all thinking - I've seen this and read this all before. I know that is true, but many don't seem to have gotten the lesson yet, do they? *And yes, while I can write about it and (maybe) get people to think, I'm simply not brave enough to intervene and stop.
